In a dazzling display of haute couture taking flight, Air India has introduced a stunning collection of new uniforms for its cabin and cockpit crew, designed by renowned fashion maestro Manish Malhotra. The unveiling marks a significant chapter in the airline’s history, blending India’s rich heritage with a contemporary vision for the future.
The airline, which referred to the new uniforms as an “ode to Air India’s rich history and a promise of a bright future,” expressed that the designs were meticulously crafted by Manish Malhotra to reflect the essence of India. The uniforms prominently feature three quintessential Indian colors—red, aubergine, and gold—symbolizing the confident and vibrant spirit of the new India.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Air India, highlighted the historic significance of the airline’s crew uniforms, expressing confidence that Manish Malhotra’s innovative designs would script an exciting new chapter in Air India’s narrative.
The rollout of the new uniforms will take place gradually over the coming months, commencing with the entry of Air India’s first Airbus A350 aircraft into service.
For the female cabin crew, the uniform is a vision of elegance, featuring a ready-to-wear ombre saree adorned with intricate patterns reminiscent of Indian heritage architecture, including the iconic jharokha, and the Vista—the new Air India logo icon. This ensemble is paired with a comfortable blouse and blazer, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Manish Malhotra, the creative force behind the designs, shared his vision for the uniforms, aiming to encapsulate India’s diverse culture and traditions while infusing a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. The chosen color palette, symbolic of India, aims to evoke pride among the crew and leave a lasting impression on passengers, embodying the warmth and hospitality for which India is renowned.
Air India emphasized the collaborative effort involved in creating the new designs, with close consultation with cabin crew representatives and the airline’s In-flight services team. An extensive testing exercise ensured that the uniforms not only met aesthetic standards but also adhered to practical considerations for comfort and functionality.
The cockpit crew’s uniform exudes professionalism, featuring a classic black double-breasted suit with a print inspired by the Vista, emphasizing timelessness and the gravitas of the flying profession.
Manish Malhotra’s attention to detail extends to curated footwear, blending style and comfort. Female cabin crew members will step out in dual-tone (black and burgundy) block heels, while their male counterparts will sport comfortable black Brogues.
As Air India embarks on this sartorial journey, the new uniforms are poised not only to redefine the airline’s visual identity but also to make a lasting impression on passengers, embodying the spirit of a resurgent and culturally rich India.
