“Ayodhya’s Maharishi Valmiki International Airport: A Cultural Marvel Taking Flight”

In a momentous stride towards connecting the sacred city of Ayodhya with the world, the newly inaugurated Maharishi Valmiki International Airport stands not only as a testament to infrastructural excellence but also as a captivating embodiment of the city’s rich cultural heritage. At a cost of ₹1462.97 crore, this airport, inspired by Lord Ram’s life and Ayodhya’s Treta Yuga heritage, has become a symbol of pride for the temple town.

The airport, which commenced operations this month, boasts a 2,200-meter long and 45-meter wide runway, with plans for a future extension to 3,200 meters in the second phase. Designed by architects like Harsh Varshneya, the airport reflects the Nagara style, featuring seven peaks (‘Shikhars’) that intricately narrate the journey of Lord Ram’s life. Varshneya describes the airport as a unique architectural masterpiece, with the main building adorned with seven pillars representing significant episodes of the Ramayana.

One striking feature outside the airport is a mural featuring a bow and arrow, symbolizing the enduring efforts of Shri Ram. The landscaping, inspired by the five elements, adds a vibrant touch to the surroundings. The grand entrance, with a stepped ‘Shikhar’ adorned with brass, welcomes passengers with a culturally rich ambiance. The mega columns supporting the terminal roof symbolize the ‘Kandas’ (chapters) of Ramayana, blending cultural richness into the very architecture of the airport.

The building itself, embracing carbon neutrality with eco-conscious GRC fibers, stands as a modern marvel while staying true to Ayodhya’s roots. Daily flights between Ahmedabad and Ayodhya are set to commence from January 11, 2024, and on January 6, the first flight between Delhi and Ayodhya will take off. Following the initial operations, plans are underway to connect Ayodhya directly to the global circuit, marking a historic moment for the city.

The airport also features two distinct types of mural plaques, ‘Daivik’ and ‘Khandika,’ as well as a captivating wall mural dedicated to Lord Hanuman, depicting his entire journey. A 3-storey high ‘Ram Darbar’ and a Madhubani painting illustrating the ‘Sita-Ram’ marriage further enhance the cultural experience for visitors.

As the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport takes flight, it not only facilitates seamless air travel but also serves as a living testament to Ayodhya’s rich cultural tapestry, inviting travelers from around the world to immerse themselves in the timeless stories and spirituality that define this revered temple town.
