In a groundbreaking move to prioritize user privacy, Google Maps is set to introduce significant updates, placing greater control over Location History directly into the hands of users. The tech giant recently announced that soon users will have the ability to store their recent activity and location data on their devices, offering an option to delete all related information with just a few taps.
One key feature involves the app displaying comprehensive activity associated with a specific location visited on Google Maps. Users will now be empowered to manage and delete their location history, directions, searches, and visits seamlessly, providing a more personalized and secure experience. These updates are expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
Offline Timeline and Location History are also set to undergo notable changes. For those who opt for the Location History feature, the ‘Timeline’ will now be stored locally on the device, with an option to back it up to the cloud with encryption for added security. Additionally, Google has adjusted the default duration for storing Location History, now set at 90 days upon activation, compared to the previous 18 months.
The iconic blue dot that signifies a user’s current location on the map is not left untouched. Clicking on the blue dot will reveal whether Location History or Timeline is active and whether Google Maps has permission to access the user’s location. This enhanced transparency ensures that users are always informed about the status of their location-related settings.
Google has assured users that notifications will be sent when these updates become available and that the rollout will occur gradually on both Android and iOS platforms throughout 2024. Users are advised not to overlook these notifications, especially those who wish to retain their Google Maps Location History, as they will have the opportunity to extend the default 90-day duration before any data is automatically removed.
