In a remarkable development, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has broken new ground by introducing modern amenities such as cafes, restrooms, and temporary lodging facilities in the historically rich Hampi circle. Previously, the government had refrained from adding such conveniences to preserve the sacredness of the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, but a recent decision marks a significant shift in approach.

Hampi, situated in Karnataka, has long been revered for its architectural marvels dating back to the Vijayanagara Empire. The village, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has drawn history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike to explore its ancient ruins amidst a surreal landscape of massive boulders.

The ASI’s initiative to establish cafes at two strategic locations near the Vijaya Vittala Temple premises and one close to the Ugra Narasimha Temple signals a step towards enhancing the overall tourist experience. The cafes, already inaugurated, offer a range of beverages, including tea and coffee priced between INR 10 to INR 20. Additionally, snack options like puffs and samosas are available, along with cold drinks and water bottles to combat the dry heat that Hampi is renowned for due to its extensive presence of granite boulders.

The ASI has further plans to introduce a complete restaurant and lodging facility, with the current provision offering clean beds, hygienic toilets, and essential services in rooms designed in the distinctive Hampi architectural style. This move aims to provide tourists with an immersive experience in the rich history of the region.

A senior ASI official expressed the intention to introduce additional outlets throughout the historical city, catering to the growing influx of visitors. The administration’s commitment to maintaining the unique architectural style of Hampi in the construction of these facilities ensures that tourists can enjoy a seamless blend of modern comfort and the historical charm of the region.

Hampi’s Virupaksha Temple, often considered the heart of the village, stands as a testament to the unique blend of history and natural beauty that characterizes this UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the addition of these tourist amenities, Hampi is poised to offer an even more inviting and enriching experience for those seeking to unravel the mysteries of medieval India amidst the captivating ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire.
