Durand Cup

In a celebration of football’s rich history, the 132nd edition of the prestigious Durand Cup is set to kick off on August 3, captivating the hearts of fans across Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar. Organized by the Indian armed forces and generously supported by the Government of Assam, this year’s tournament promises to be a spectacle of talent, tradition, and international flair.

Unlike any other football tournament in the world, the Durand Cup, established in 1888, holds the distinction of being the oldest in Asia and the third oldest globally. Over the years, it has been the nurturing ground for India’s footballing prodigies, showcasing the nation’s passion for the sport.

This year’s edition will witness matches being played in three distinct venues – Guwahati and Kokrajhar in Assam and Kolkata in West Bengal. The tournament has expanded its reach, featuring 24 teams, a notable increase from the previous edition. Among them, all 12 Indian Super League (ISL) teams will be vying for the coveted trophy, adding a layer of top-tier competition to the historic event.

In a remarkable development, two foreign services teams hailing from Bangladesh and Nepal will grace the tournament after a hiatus of 27 years. This international participation underscores the Durand Cup’s growing influence and its appeal beyond national borders.

The tournament format promises intense competition, with 12 ISL teams, three Indian Armed forces teams, two foreign services teams, and seven I-League teams battling for supremacy. Football enthusiasts can anticipate an exhilarating display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

What makes the Durand Cup truly unique is its distinctive prize structure. The winning team will not only lift the prestigious Durand Cup itself, a rolling trophy with a storied history, but also the Simla Trophy, first presented in 1903 by the residents of Simla. Additionally, they will claim the President’s Cup, a permanent keepsake inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, in 1956.

As the tournament unfolds over the course of a month, fans can expect a showcase of footballing prowess and a celebration of the beautiful game’s enduring legacy. The 132nd Durand Cup is poised to leave an indelible mark on the sporting landscape, reinforcing its status as a cultural phenomenon and a cornerstone of Indian football history.
