In a new initiative named IFFM Baari, meaning “House” in Bengali, the festival aims to create an inclusive space for leaders and founders from diverse creative industries to engage with emerging voices from South Asian communities. IFFM Baari will serve as a hub supporting, empowering, and nurturing diverse creative narratives through various events such as keynote speakers, panel discussions, networking sessions, and comedy shows.

During the industry event, veteran actress Shabana Azmi received the IFFM Excellence Award, an honor she was unable to accept in 2023. Recognized for her powerful and versatile performances in Indian cinema, Azmi has received numerous accolades, including five National Film Awards during her illustrious four-decade career.

Expressing her gratitude, Shabana Azmi stated, “I am thankful to every technician, spot boy, light guy, everyone who deserves to be celebrated. I’m grateful to the Governor, the Government of Victoria, and IFFM to honor me with the Excellence in Cinema Award.”

The festival will also premiere “My Melbourne,” a groundbreaking project set in Melbourne with a local cast and crew, mentored by renowned filmmakers Rima Das, Kabir Khan, Imtiaz, and Onir. The film series, guided by the motto “a film with you, about you, and for you,” will explore timely stories celebrating diversity within the LGBTQAI+ community, disability, race, and gender.

“My Melbourne” is a collaboration with Vic Screen and Screen Australia, aiming to authentically reflect the experiences and stories of the community, drawing inspiration directly from their unique narratives. The festival’s commitment to diversity and representation is evident in its initiatives and choice of films, making the 15th edition a significant celebration of Indian cinema and cultural exchange.
