Thailand Aims to Boost Tourism, Waives Visa Requirements for Indian and Taiwanese Travelers

Bangkok – In a strategic move to attract more tourists as the high season approaches, Thailand has announced the waiver of visa requirements for travelers from India and Taiwan. The initiative, effective from next month until May 2024, is part of Thailand’s broader plan to reach approximately 28 million tourist arrivals this year.
Thailand’s decision follows a similar move in September, when visa requirements for Chinese tourists were lifted, recognizing China as the country’s top pre-pandemic tourism market, contributing to 11 million of the record-breaking 39 million arrivals in 2019.

“Arrivals from India and Taiwan can now enter Thailand for 30 days,” confirmed government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke.
India has emerged as Thailand’s fourth-largest source market for tourism in the current year, with approximately 1.2 million arrivals. This move is expected to stimulate inbound tourism from India further, as airlines and hospitality chains increasingly target this growing market.
The decision aligns with Thailand’s ambitious goal of welcoming 28 million tourists in 2023. The country’s new government is optimistic that the travel sector can play a crucial role in offsetting the impact of continued weak exports, which have constrained economic growth.
From January to October 29, Thailand recorded 22 million visitors, contributing a significant 927.5 billion baht ($25.67 billion), according to the latest government data. The waiver of visa requirements for Indian and Taiwanese travelers is anticipated to bolster these figures and enhance the economic contribution of the tourism sector.
As Thailand opens its doors to more international visitors, the travel industry eagerly awaits the influx of tourists during the upcoming high season, fostering hopes for a robust recovery in the tourism-dependent economy.
